Departmentof Gujarati

The Gujarati Department saw its beginning in the year 1948. Over the years it hasendeavoured to inculcate a love for the language of Gujarati. The Department has seen manya dedicated professor and sincere student strive continuously along the path ofexcellence.

Gujarati is offered as a subject from the Junior College right up to the SYBA level asan ancillary subject.

The Department boasts of an outstanding collection of Gujarati books in the collegelibrary. From the divine and mystical writings of Narsinh Mehta and Meerabai, tocontemporary writers like K.M. Munshi, Harkishen Mehta and Gunavant Shah - these writersover the years have provided our students with an in-depth insight into the mysteries ofthe language.

Gujarati Sahitya Mandal

The Gujarati Sahitya Mandal was also born in 1948. The mandal celebrated its GoldenJubilee this year. Its uniqueness in the University of Mumbai can be gauged from theannouncement of the Life Time Achievement awards installed in the memory of its firstchairman, Prof. Madhukar Randeria. These annual awards over the years have exchanged handsamongst the college's own former students who have done the college proud by theirachievements in the world of Gujarati Theatre (Deepak Gheewalla, Homi Wadia, TikuJalsaniya, Siddharth Randeria, Sujata Mehta and Suresh Rajda).
